Russia’s Donor Database to be Formed by end-2012

19.06.2012 18:56 / RIA Novosti

“This year, we are laying finishing touches on the donor database, that will enable every registered donor to come to a different area of the country, be identified and give blood there if he likes. People have had problems in doing so. When the database is ready, any person anywhere can show their passport, be identified in the database and give blood as a proper donor”, said Head of Federal Medicine and Biology Agency Vladinir Uiba at a RIA Novosti press conference.

Another advantage of a unified database is the ability to reflect the amount of stored blood and blood components nationwide, delivering it where it is needed ASAP. “We are currently shipping blood 500 km maximum, we look at the man to see where the nearest supply is. Then we use planes, helicopters or cars to deliver. It takes 2-3 hours maximum”, said Uiba.

In the recent four years, 87 donor centers in all 83 territories of Russia, as well as 15 federal centers have been reequipped and modernized.

The number of regular donors and the total amount of stored blood have increased due to the new program. The program began in 2007, and plasma supplies have increased 90%, while hospital demand rose only 30%, thus the demand for donor blood is now fully covered.
