Ministry of Culture Drafts 3-Day Visa-Free Entry Law

20.07.2012 13:31 / RIA Novosti

Foreign tourists will need no visa for a 3-day stay in Russia, if their purpose of visit is a cultural event. A draft law is being prepared by the Ministry of Culture, Vice President for Social Affairs Olga Golodets told the press Friday.

“We are after an increased tourist inflow, both internally – meaning schoolchildren – and 3-day tours from abroad that will require no visa”, said Golodets.

The Vice Premier is certain that the 3-day visa-free visits are perfect for cultural events such as the Russian Opera and Ballet Week. “Russia’s guests could visit Mariinsky or Bolshoi or Perm Opera”, said Golodets.

According to her, the visa-free short stays are common in many countries. This scheme also works in Russia for water transport passengers, for instance cruise ships entering ports in St Petersburg and the Far East.

She stated that the visa-free program is being developed at the Ministry of Culture, and the bill will be tentatively introduced to the State Duma in October.
